Construction of Newly Extended Runway at RD Airport Completed

The runway will be fully operational upon final inspection and approval. Red Deer Airport CEO George Friesen credits favorable early spring weather and efficient construction crews for completing the project on time.

Hwy 2 interchange project fine-tuned

Drivers have been slowly adjusting to major traffic changes in Red Deer as construction on the Gaetz Avenue/Hwy 2 interchange project is underway.
Alberta Transportation had to make an adjustment to roadway closures at the south end of Gaetz Avenue after last Saturday when a lot of drivers poured into the Southpointe Common shopping centre instead of onto the flyover that leads to Hwy 2.

Gasoline Alley to get residential and commercial project

A six-storey commercial and residential complex marks the latest multi-million investment in Red Deer County’s Gasoline Alley.
Sylvan Lake-based Emerald Developments Ltd. is planning to start work soon on a project that will feature a ground-floor grocery store, pharmacy and doctors office topped by 60 one-two-and three-bedroom rental suites aimed at the 55-plus market.

Significant SCC Decision Increases all Risk Insurance Coverage

The Supreme Court of Canada (the “SCC”) issued a decision dealing with coverage under a builders’ risk insurance policy that has important implications for owners, contractors and insurance companies. At issue was the interpretation of the exclusion of coverage for “the cost of making good faulty workmanship,” which appears in many commercial risks policies.

Drywall tariff causes construction cost hike

Canadian builders are getting hit by higher drywall prices due to preliminary tariffs imposed by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) earlier this month.
The decision stems from a complaint filed with the CBSA by CertainTeed Gypsum Canada Inc.
The company alleges that imports of gypsum board originating in, or exported from, the U.S., imported to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories, are being dumped.

The city is seeking the public’s input on how to transform Centennial Park Plaza, south of the downtown McDonald’s Restaurant, into a “sustainable… accessible and safe space that people want to visit and use.”

Commercial Permits Edge Up Over Last Year

Commercial building permits showed an increase for August 2016 compared to the same month last year. A new Tim Horton’s Restaurant at 110, 6802 50 Avenue, with a permit value of $450,000, contributed to this increase.

2016 Scholarship Recipients Announced

The Red Deer Construction Association has been honored for the past 12 years to present scholarship awards to local apprentices.
This year we had 30 entries submitted with 22 individuals being awarded scholarships to help towards their ongoing schooling.   The scholarship committee of the RDCA awarded two $1,000 awards, five $750 awards and fifteen $500 awards.  Since its inception in 2004, the RDCA has awarded a total of 151 scholarships spanning a wide range of various trades totaling over $82,000.  […]
